Michael Taylor is a seasoned professional musician, educator, whose lifelong passion for music is deeply intertwined with his faith. With decades of experience across performance, teaching, and ministry, Michael has dedicated his life to both mastering his craft and inspiring others through music.
His musical journey began at an early age, sparked by a simple children’s song called “Donkey, Donkey.” Its melody captivated him so deeply that he played it repeatedly, unknowingly laying the foundation for a lifelong calling. That early fascination grew stronger when he encountered the music of The Beatles, whose sound left him awestruck and further ignited his passion.
At just 10 years old, Michael began formal training on the piano. By high school, he expanded his musical abilities to include drums and guitar, quickly developing a versatile skill set. At age 15, after discovering a deep connection with the drums, he knew with certainty that music would be his life’s path. From that moment forward, he pursued both performance and education with unwavering commitment.
Michael holds an Associate of Science degree in Commercial Music and was honored with the prestigious Vocal Jazz Drummer Award from the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE). His performance career spans a wide range of musical settings, including orchestra pits for musicals, chamber ensembles, choirs, and live shows.
Committed to faith, Michael served for more than 35 years as a staff drummer, bassist, and vocalist in multiple churches. He has also invested in the next generation by directing and teaching youth worship bands, combining musical excellence with spiritual mentorship. His role as Worship Leader at Green Oak Ranch in Vista, California, reflects his heart for leading others in meaningful worship.
In addition to his ministry work, Michael has built a strong reputation as a music educator. He has taught percussion for organizations such as the Boys & Girls Club, various after-school programs, and both public and private schools. He also served as Band Camp Director at Encinitas Country Day School. He provides private lessons to students of all ages.
As a professional musician, Michael has extensive experience as a session drummer and bass guitarist, performing at renowned venues including the House of Blues (San Diego), The Belly Up (San Diego and Aspen), The Fillmore (San Francisco), and the Henry Miller Library (Big Sur). His touring experience includes work with Holiday & the Adventure Pop Collective, an Americana band recognized with multiple award nominations in San Diego.
He also was a member of Liquid Blue, a band recognized in the Guinness World Records as the “Most-Traveled Band in the World,” further highlighting the breadth of his performance career.
Beyond performing and teaching, Michael also is a songwriter and recording artist, having written and recorded more than 20 original songs. Whether on stage, in the classroom, or in worship, his life reflects a deep commitment to music as both an art form and a calling.
